The authors describe the process their university used when designing a new science workspace. They emphasize the importance of involving all the stakeholders in some way to ensure a safe, useful product that everyone from students to construction engineers to maintenance people feel meets the goals for the institution and the users. They also pointed out that designing for future flexibility is helpful, as is testing the overall design through the use of models. I have worked on committees involved in redesign projects that did not always meet the overall mission when completed, and I think this is excellent advice, I just wish it had been available before our project to use as a resource and guideline.
