In this article university instructors explain two ways to use a design challenge involving paper airplanes. The design challenge was presented in two very different courses. One course was an elementary science methods class for pre-service teachers, and the other course was a general physics course for non-science majors. By changing the details of the design challenge, the instructors were able to change the focus of the activity and meet the pedagogical goals for the two very different courses. The instructors wanted to emphasize the importance of framing design challenges for specific teaching and learning needs. The article does an effective job in highlighting the similarities and differences that resulted from the two different design challenge queries.
