The fact that many students arrive at college without adequate reading skills is well documented. Rather that leave this to the humanities instructors, incorporating content based literacy into science class improves learning. This is a well designed study using appropriate control group to show that the incorporation of literacy strategies (concept mapping, writing and question development) increases success in freshman biology. There is every reason this would work equally well in chemistry and physics.
