This author was inspired by a book about journals as a ‘model for students to become better observers and journal keepers.’ This resource provides a layout for nature observations which is included in the article. Another teacher suggests a trade book that she used to ‘to help her students learn to make more detailed observations.’ Another trade book models how to make more detailed observations for students of a different grade level. Throughout this article there are references to different grade level resources that would be helpful in modeling journal entries for elementary students and teachers. Science notebooks can be effective...or not, depending on the time a teacher takes to help students learn the skills necessary for success. Students can use notebooks for many reasons in science, but must be taught what quality looks like in order to really learn from their journals. Great article giving many ideas and book suggestions as to how to do this!
