This is a great chapter for 5th graders. It gave a week long unit directly over the coral reef. I really liked how they started the week with what the student knew, what the students wanted to know and what they learned. I think that is a great idea especially for the teacher. This lets teachers know exactly where the students are on the knowledge of coral reefs. Another great point was the way that every subject was integrated in this unit. There is science, math, reading and social studies. The social studies aspect was very interesting. I personally gained a new view on coral reefs after reading this chapter and how we as teachers should bring in many aspects to what may look like a purely science lesson.
