Students realized that after reading “Great Black Heroes: Five Brilliant Scientists” some scientists developed testable questions about the world around them as children growing up. The author wanted her elementary students to design and build a classroom isopod habitat. To do these students had to gather information through original investigations they designed and documented. The balance of the article chronicles what the students did, provides sample student work, and illustrates their progress. This is a great example of student designed learning.
