This article elaborates on the three transformations in inquiry: data to evidence; evidence to patterns; and patterns to explanations. This article is full of great resources that support inquiry such as ‘Taking Science to School’ (NRC 2007) and ‘Ready, Set, Science’ (NRC) 2008. The author uses these and other resources as an indicator that those associated with science education at all levels have learned about how students really learn. This is a great article to show how the transition has occurred from the Benchmarks to the NGSS regarding inquiry learning.

No one has says it as well as Bob Dylan and Richard Duschl, the author of this brief and concise but informative article about how inquiry science is changing and so it necessitates change in how we assess it.
Ruchard discusses the essential features of inquiry as containing 3 transformation in scientifc inquiry (2003 Duschl)
-data is evidence or determining whethre data are anomalous or count as valid evidence.
-Evidence patterns, or searching for patterns in and generating moles for evidence.
-Patterns to explanations, or developing explanations on the basis of the evidence/models selected.
So assessing inquiry should focus on studeents making these transformations.
