Starting with a story is a sure fired way to engage young children in elementary school. The book mentioned here is about a prairie ecosystem. From the story trading cards were developed that described one member of the ecosystem and some basic facts about that organism. Students trade them to learn about the different members of the ecosystem. From this using a piece of yard they develop a food web.
