Extending student learning is something that can be done with the family in creating what this article calls ‘Summer Science Journals.” The one page journal article calls for children with their families a simple statement and drawing a picture of what they saw. This is accomplish by sending students a summer letter asking parents to help develop their science inquiry skills of observing and recording through a drawing, while having fun.

One way to help students practice some of the basic science process skills is to provide parents with simple science journals created for their children to complete as they go on various family outings during the summer. Ms. Ashbrook mails home these journals when school is out. As parents take their children to the playground, grocery store, etc., there are pages that focus the children’s attention to specific experiences they might write about and draw to explain their thinking and record their observations. The author tells us to be prepared to spend a few moments with former students when they come back in the fall. Those students who participate can’t wait to share their completed journals.
