This is one of the best articles I have read recently. It has students explore sealed mystery boxes at the beginning of school to get them used to inquiry based learning. After exploring the boxes they have a science conference to discuss their results. Then they open the boxes to see how accurate their results were. What an engaging way to have students experience realistic science!!

I especially liked the author's suggestion of incorporating materials in the mystery boxes that will be used again during the school year. This activity is great for building a positive classroom climate, cooperation, and group dynamics. Each time one of the mystery box objects is used students will remember the beginning of the year activity and will be immediately engaged in the new lesson. Simple ideas are often the best ones.
