This article gives an excellent overview of the different types of clay. It gives the uses of each type and also discusses any potential health hazards of each type. It gives some examples of science activities that use clay. I have often wondered about all the different types of clay and which is the most effective in various activities and this article answered all of those questions.

One may not realize that something as readily available for school use as modeling clay may have hidden hazards. In this article Dr. Roy lists the various types of modeling clay available, their pros and cons, and gives suggestions for which to purchase for children’s use. The article also reminds us that no manufacturer has ever stated that clay is safe to eat. So for the very young, clay should be saved until the children are old enough to know better than to put items like clay in their mouths.
