In this “Early Years” article, Ms. Ashbrook provides suggestions for integrating plant reproduction with hands-on activities for preschoolers. She shows how to weave these learning activities into the various components of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). She has students compare a variety of ways plants might reproduce, and she highlights how strawberries and spider plants can form new plants from seeds and via runners or stolons. A lesson plan is included where students grow plants in order to discuss the evidence they have collected on how plants reproduce. By planting a plant that produces by stolons and another plant (like a bean) that doesn’t, the students can compare these two ways that plant can reproduce more of their own kind. This is an ongoing investigation that could continue for a few months and create several inquiry science experiences for some of our youngest learners.
NSTA Press produces classroom-ready activities, hands-on approaches to inquiry, relevant professional development, the latest scientific education news and research, assessment and standards-based instruction.
