This article shows how effective word walls can be if you include student participation, attractive color pictures, and real objects. Complete detailed instructions are given in the article. If one is looking for a way to increase their students’ science vocabulary, the authors of this journal article offer interactive word walls in 5 easy steps. One of the glaring improvements over a traditional word wall is the interactive component. Another difference is that the interactive word wall is student-generated and not teacher-generated. I think that this article highlights several good things about the opportunities that an interactive word wall can add to any classroom. Interactive word walls can be used at any grade level and add a different component of instruction to everyday learning. Students can achieve more success and higher understanding when they take responsibility of their learning and incorporate life experiences and background knowledge with an interactive word wall. These types of word walls are fun and not only involve words, but objects as well. Students have more involvement in these types of word walls because they can bring things from home and research outside of class. Although a teacher may provide guidelines for the wall, it is student run. This article also gives steps for teachers to achieve a successful word wall as well as problems and solutions that you may run into. I would recommend this pedagogical article to other teachers to try something new in their classroom!
