This article provides a literature connection to ongoing investigations where students plant their own seeds and watch progressive plant growth. The two books featured are “How a Seed Grows” by Helen J. Jordan, and “What is a Plant?” by Bobbie Kalman. Two lesson plans are provided. One lesson describes how students in kindergarten through second grade can observe progressive plant growth. Using a 5 E inquiry lesson plan format, students plant several bean seeds; then unearth them at different points during their growth cycles to make observations and comparisons. The second lesson plan is geared toward grades 3 – 5, and students determine if plants grow the same way under varying soil conditions. The lessons would be great hands-on activities to introduce units on seed propagation, plant growth or life cycles. The connections to the Common Core ELA Standards and Next Generation Science Standards are clearly shown.
