Depending on where you live and the time of year, you may have access to an abundance of earthworms in your own backyard. If not, they can be obtained through a local bait store. At the Chicago Botanic Garden, earthworms are considered an invasive species to the surrounding woodland. So systems are in place to make sure any cuddly creepy crawlers are sequestered to a specific area. If you live in an area where earthworms are not an indigenous species, you will need to caution the children about not releasing any purchased worms to new surroundings. This article has the students exploring their outdoor surroundings to uncover the secretive side of the earthworm. After discussing some safety precautions, the authors provide a 5 E lesson to learn about worms and their habitats. An excellent learning strategy is used, a KLEW chart, to help the students organize their observations. This article is worth the read if you plan to include these interesting annelids in your curriculum.
