Teaching Through Trade Books: Energy Explorations

by: Christine Anne Royce

This column includes activities inspired by children’s literature. Young students should understand that sunlight warms the Earth and be able to make decisions about maximizing energy by using different types of materials and locations to keep objects cool or warm. Older students can begin to investigate not only the use of the Sun’s energy in solar power but also how the Sun’s energy from long ago is still helping us through the burning of fossil fuels. These concepts support the idea that humans use both renewable and nonrenewable energy to survive.
