Five types of visual reality are introduced in a timeline starting with stereophoto cards (or stereopticon viewing) which was used to fool ones vision into seeing a sort of 3-D effect. This was followed by the View-Master viewer and reels. Stereogram (random dot images) followed which creates embedding images in a larger image. Today we have 3-D movies and in the future there will be more virtual reality with headsets. This is only the introduction to some really fun activities that explains the science behind these ‘visual illusions’ that students will really enjoy.

I love the lesson plan ideas in this article, and with the increase interest in 3D movies, it is a current and relevant topic to study. The article provides content information on why we see in 3D, how we can trick our eyes into seeing in 3D, the history of photography in 3D, and some really great lesson plan ideas on how to use this topic in meaningful and engaging ways in the classroom. There is also an extension that includes sources from other websites to use with the lesson plan ideas. I highly recommend this article, and I can't wait to try it out next year!
