Using different images of bridges will engage students to looking at the mechanics behind bridge building. In particular students can look at the difference between compression and tension forces. An activity is provided to use while discussion suspension bridges. Included in this activity is a worksheet to understand trusses found in modern bridges. Building and testing a model is an important aspect in learning about these forces. This article also provides some good extensions. This is a good introductory engineering activity.
