I am currently researching learning technologies, and specifically I am interested in researching the use of a learning cycle, such as the 5E model, for web based instruction. Sterling (2002) provides a three step model for consideration: 1) open exploration of website/activity 2) focused investigation and 3) student generated investigations (based upon student higher order developed questions). I am extremely fascinated by the methods used in the lesson plan, and while the topic - hurricanes - does not fit into what I teach, the format can! I am excited to continue exploring teaching within the web using the 3-phase learning cycle discussed in this article. For those that do teach hurricanes, there is an outline on how to approach the web-based instruction. And for those that don't teach this topic, the format can serve as a great example as to how to set up instruction. Overall, I highly recommend this article for anyone interested in engaging students in 21st century learning through the web.

The article extols the wonders of using the Internet to teach about hurricanes. First the authors go to a USA Today website to explore what hurricanes are all about and look at an interactive. From there they go to a hurricane data location which will be used to actually track a hurricane on a hurricane tracking map. While the idea is good and not really that new there is so much more information and technology enhanced activities that can be used to expand this type of activity such as using NASA imaging and more.
