GIS stands for Geological Information Systems. As the article points out GIS “combines layers of information to give you a better understanding of places.” The reader is introduced to ESRI which combines mapping, database, and spreadsheet capability with a geographic representation engine. One learns about ArcView and ArcVoyager from ESRI. The authors provide examples of how this data can be applied and used in the classroom. Having tried this myself, a teacher definitely needs to preview and get comfortable with the software and options before using it in the classroom. It can be more challenging than it looks. If you can master the programs you can create very powerful tools to help students understand the relationship between environmental and population densities for example.
