If you are looking for a long-term project where students do ongoing observations of the moon, this article may be the ticket to an out-of-this-world engagement! This article provides an excellent example of how today’s technology can be used to help students connect across continents to study astronomy/earth science concepts, make observations, and learn how their views of the moon are different when they observe the “same” night sky. Does the moon stay in view for the same length of time in Fairbanks, Alaska and Indianapolis, Indiana? Do students in Australia see the moon in the same “spot” as students in New Mexico? Through careful observations and technically savvy ways to chat, students discovered that the night sky looked different depending on where they lived. The Moon Project outlined in this article provided a means for students of different cultures to share their ancestors’ stories about the moon and showed how the Moon has been a part of our cultural heritage for centuries. A Moon Observation worksheet is provided as well as information about the cultural heritage of the Pueblo Indians.
