What is a "Formative Assessment Probe?" and "How can I as a teacher use it?" are two questions answered by this article. Formative Assessment probes help the teacher assess what their students are thinking before completely designing their Units. The feedback gained from these assessments can guide modifications and refinement in curriculum, thus meeting the needs of the student more fully. The diagnostic nature of a formative assessment helps teachers identify misconceptions, incomplete ideas, and helps them strengthen and focus on the areas that their students need to address. Summative assessments are often too late to address an area of concern, especially if teachers have limited time to develop their curriculum.
