This article is two of two. It is best to read both together. In part two, students experience the skills that cartographers use to make maps and learn the importance of correct map scale. Students also explore the problem of map distortion. An activity that could be used in the classroom is given. Students compare historic maps and develop a map from a description in a literary work. A sample list of resources is given.

Ties to literature, including The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Could tie some reading into the mix as well. Excellent multidisciplinary approach.
