FIRES (Facts, Incidents, Reasons, Examples, and Statistics), is a strategy for teaching students to evaluate information. In this article the author demonstrates the use of this strategy while introducing the topic of stem cells from multiple sources. Students are exposed to resources and are asked to classify into the 5 categories of FIRES. The lesson is provided in the article and the reader can follow how this strategy is applied. This is an interesting approach.

The author does a good job of summarizing cell theory, the history of stem cell research and the ethical concerns behind the experimental use of embryonic stem cells.I was hoping to find a more in-depth discussion of how statistical methods are used in research. What I found was statistics which support the author's position on stem cell research. Students should be guided to consider both sides of any ethical argument. The statistics that support either side should be evaluated and weighed without bias towards one argument over the other.Students are the leaders of tomorrow. Teaching them to think with an open-mind is a teacher's number one responsibility in my opinion.
