This article describes one teacher’s use of products testing in the classroom to develop students understanding of experimental design. For the first part of the year students learn about the nature of science, controlled experiments, the FDA and Consumer Reports. In the second part of the school year after the holidays the student are allows to perform their own test on consumer products after they submit a proposal. The guidelines for the proposal are provided in the article and once approved students embark on an exploration of their own design. A neat way to develop student centered inquiry.
