This article describes a four part approach to learning about moon phases. Students first observe the moon for several weeks, the second step engages students in English class through a look at the multicultural and mythological stories related to phases of the moon, and the third step incorporates what students observed as they model the phases. The conclusion of this mini-unit with the Lunar Phases Concept Inventory is a post made by the students. This article addresses a seventh grade class but I feel that it could work for grades from upper elementary to middle school students.

Although it is a brief description, teachers can customize the ideas from the information provided. In addition, there are samples of student work at the seventh grade level.
