It is not uncommon that educators use non-education videos as rewards for a variety of reasons in the classroom. There are actually federal laws that deal with copyright rules that educators might be breaking. This article lists exceptions to the rule, recommended viewing policy guidelines, and answers some common questions about copyright issues. This is an issue that educators should review and maybe even introduce to middle school students.

This article goes over the legal issues involved in showing movies or television programming in the classroom. It explains copyright laws as they apply to schools and what types of videos are most appropriate and what to tell parents when you send that note home for permission to show a video. I was surprised that for-profit schools, like the charter schools going up all around me, are NOT included as educational institutions and are NOT provided educational exemptions to the copyright rules. Good advise to keep yourself and your building out of trouble with parents or laws.
