Personal Care Chemistry as a Bridge to Careers in Science and Technology

by: Patricia Mabrouk

This activity in personal care chemistry seeks to provide middle school girls with an opportunity to learn firsthand about science and engineering technology. The activities--the preparation of lip balm and hand lotion--are fun, easy to do, and they make use of relatively inexpensive, safe, environmentally benign, and readily available materials. These projects foster within students an interest and enthusiasm for science and chemistry, and they infuse students with the joy of discovery that is a pivotal element in modern scientific research.
