Wow, what an interesting and inventive way to teach science. The authors of this article had their students choose a fairy tale and research the science behind it. They had to analyze the fairy tale for scientific facts, form a hypothesis, and give data to prove or disprove the hypothesis.

A group of girls who worked independently but could meet in a group of six to share ideas were encouraged to select a fairy tale and analyze the story for validity by doing research. They engaged in the process of formulating hypotheses and critiquing and evaluating research to determine the possibility of the fairy tale occurring. This was done in a 15 weeks study. It is a very unique approach to the nature of science. The rubric is provided. It might be an interesting approach to combine reading with science in an afterschool or summer program.
