Science Sampler: How many lefties in our classroom?

by: Katie Rommel-Esham

Probability sampling is an interdisciplinary math and science skill that often serves as the precursor to conducting scientific research. This article describes a lesson that uses probability sampling to allow middle school students to investigate some questions that were interesting to them, beginning with the prevalence (or lack thereof!) of left-handed students in their school. It helped to bring math and science together in a meaningful way and allowed them to work with a fun medium to examine the ways in which researchers collect, analyze, and interpret data, and deal with problems that might arise over the course of their investigations.
