In an effort to link real-world science with what sixth graders were studying about food webs, habitat and the environment, this educator used an article about the decline of in the environment. Students planned for a debate about the problem by assigning roles and delving into research based on these roles. The author felt that the design of a debate was an excellent way to combine students learning with problem solving. This technique deepened student understanding of the relevance of science topics with real world situations.
