In this 5E lesson students learn how charcoal absorbs chlorine and then design a filtration system using charcoal. The activity provides information on the history of water purification. Useful suggestions are made for the teacher makes the materials needed easily available and at the lowest possible expense. Everything is fully explained with photos for the parts of the 5E learning cycle. The worksheet is designed to make the students think. This is the kind of activity that would really engage students.

I very much liked the concept of this activity, but unfortunately it requires a great deal of supplies. Some of which I know that I do not have in my classroom. If you have equipment and a budget, it is well worth looking into this lab for a design activity.
