While beginning a new unit, a teacher notes one of his/her students proclaim a misconception as a truth. What action should be taken? This article shows how a teacher might approach students’ misunderstandings and explains a clever use of a file folder to help students organize their research findings. Three Common Core State Standards are addressed in the process: gathering information from a variety of sources and taking notes; using that information to develop and clearly convey ideas through a written, informative text; and looking for common themes within that information to draw conclusions. The file folder organizational prop is called a “Comprehension-Window Folder, and students use sticky notes to organize their research findings into three categories: possible claims, evidence, and recurring ideas. This article is chock full of excellent ideas for integrating language arts and science, and it incorporates the Next Generation Science Standards in the science component of the lesson. It is an excellent example of how to engage students in literacy skills using science content as the vehicle.
