This article brings up an important point that we teachers need to remember when we are helping our students be environmentally savvy and safety conscious. It is a fine line we follow making sure they are safe yet actively engaged as we help them understand the dangers and hazards that lurk behind each classroom corner. We want them to be responsible global and classroom citizens; however, we don't want them to be so concerned that they can't function. Whether we are sharing the problems facing our planet or the safety hazards facing our students while learning science, we need to be truthful without spreading doom and gloom. We need to be thorough with the safety concerns without paralyzing our students' natural curiosities and enthusiasm. If you have ever had a parent call you to tell you (as an example) his/her child is now afraid to eat medium rare steak because of what they learned in science class that week about parasites, then you know what the author of this article is trying to get across. What we say IS being heard - loudly but not always clearly.
