Using a simple question, students investigate the effect of different methods of making sweet tea. They use probes to determine things such as color of the tea, eletronegativity, and temperature. It is a nice inquiry that has students collecting data using different measuring tools.

The challenge that the authors, in an eighth grade science class, proposed to their students was “Is there a difference between the southern tea, sweetened when the liquid was hot and the non-southern tea, sweetened when the liquid was at room temperature?” The article begins by addressing the NGSS standards. Next, beginning with each group receiving two solutions, each individual student was to write down in their lab notebooks what they observed. The teachers provided some terms to prompt the students responses. The article supplied guiding questions that can be used by the teacher to encourage and expand student comments. After discussions about student observations, a “Planning Template” was passed out to each group (supplied in the article) to help each group design an investigation that will answer the challenge question. More guiding questions were supplied by the authors to further extend each groups results. The teacher then poses a possible conclusion to the investigations that his students preformed. This was an interesting activity with the guiding questions the strongest part. Several alternate activities were then supplied to further investigate the same concept.
