A field trip is usually a one-time event in any given school year. As a result students are unable to observe changes over time. This can be resolved using virtual field trips and data mining at Internet sites. A couple of data-rich sites mentioned in the article and that have to do with water quality are Water on the Web (WOW) and River Run. WOW provides data for the five critical water quality parameters usually investigated in science classes. These are temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), electrical conductivity, and turbidity. The article explains how River Run can be used all year long to help students observe several different water quality attributes over time. For teachers planning water quality lessons, this article provides several excellent ideas.
