The Cougar Conservation Project is a great example of a successful problem based learning project. It helps students relate what they are learning in class to a problem faced by their own community. This article offers great first hand information on how to organize, run and assess a problem based learning unit focused on current issues in a local environment. The steps to the successful completion of a PBL unit are mapped out in five general, yet thoroughly explained steps. While this PBL unit does not apply to my local area ~ no cougars, there is enough information provided to inspire ideas on how I could implement a similar unit in my area. I especially like the references to local scientist and ecology groups, and how the teacher worked with these groups to enhance the students’ educational experience. While the experience may not directly relate to your students’ learning environment, the overall framework presented in the article could inspire similar PBL unit plans designed to fit your local environment. I high recommend this article for any teacher considering implementing a PBL unit.
