This article briefly addresses our countries dependence upon petroleum and the need for us to consider alternative energy source, especially in light of the diminishing petroleum reserves and our environment. Moreover, the article offers multiple research points for additional student or teacher investigation into energy through the following big idea questions: “Your students live in a world powered by petroleum…..But do they know where all the energy that they readily use on a daily basis comes from? Will they know where to find it tomorrow?” These questions present a great Problem Based Learning Unit focus point, and the article offers insight into possible points of research to find the answers to these questions. In addition, the ages of energy, such as the age of coal, offers ideas to students and teachers on additional ways to explore energy, natural resources and the environment. Regardless, it discusses a source of information available from AGI on energy consumption and how it can affect our lifestyle in the present and future, especially the use of petroleum.
