This article is very interesting. The idea of using analogies throughout the clearly defined stages for the 5E model shows its effectiveness and specific examples. It explains the pros and cons to using analogies in the classroom and how to emphasize the positives. In this it emphasizes the importance of listing not only similarities of the analogies but it's differences as well. This is something we don't often think of. However this is so important to make a meaningful impact to an analogy.
Neat connection!

After taking my Gifted Endorsement I can honestly say that I really didn’t have any ‘ah-ha’ moments reading the article discussing tiering of science activities. It is very hard to remember that there are those districts and schools that don’t have the driven focus of differentiation that our district does at the same level. The article referenced Carol Ann Tomlinson and the important of understanding the student’s current level of learning and relating their readiness to the activity that is presented. I would be greatly surprised if any of my fellow colleagues in this endorsements did not already do this as if it is second nature! My greatest take from article discussing tiering is to actually remember the need to incorporate time, energy, and patience into these tiered lessons as levels of frustration between activities can vary greatly depending on the activity and structure of the lesson.
I actually felt that the analogies article carried the most relevance in regards to new information. I love the idea of comparing concepts through analogies. It also led me to reflect on those instances when that is actually a strategy I’ve used, yet never really considered it a phase applied to the 5E model. I also had never really considered it more than the engagement phase either. I think there is so much emphasis on creating the “hook” when introducing a topic in ANY subject area. I love the idea of using this during the explanation phase since many of the ideas that are introduced and discussed are something that the student may have no prior knowledge about. In the example they provided with “Cell City”, it was very evident that during the explanation phase when using analogies it was important to see the similarities and differences between the concepts. I know personally that I will sometimes tend to lecture this information, but sometimes it is as simple as a visual aid, like the example provided, that makes the connection of the analogy to the learner easy for them to understand. The reiteration of the analogy importance in problem solving already has me thinking of ways to integrate this into lessons.
