Students may not understand why adults and politicians are raging about environmental issues. Showing students short movie clips and such often make the understanding less complex. This article provides a list of movies, scenes, discussion questions and standard links to serve as prompts to start discussions about environmental issues. Suggestions are also provided about choosing movies. This is a win-win situation. Students enjoy a clip and learn that science affects everyone.

The author presents an argument that film clips of significant scenes in popular movies can attract student interest in science topics, specifically in this instance, environmental themes. I have to agree that in most cases, the entire movie can be too much and take from the curriculum. And the selection the author presents and the critical questions are very good issues for students to consider and discuss. This is indeed a good way to "hook" students into a discussion of bigger issues and many of the movies listed are things the students would be familiar with but had maybe not looked at as a scientist. He also has some good suggestions on how to show videos legally and how to acquire videos inexpensively. The article is short and has many useful suggestions.
