This is a great article with suggestions for a first day lesson. The lesson is clearly outlined with ideas to ways to engage students throughout each portion of the lesson. The author also includes several first day errors to avoid. The lesson presented in this article is an excellent primer for starting off a new school year strongly! I'll definitely keep this article in mind to implement this lesson on the first day next year.

Perhaps the author didn't intend for the entire lesson to be lecture, but that's the way I interpreted what I read. Almost every section of the suggested lesson plan outline used terms such as teach, discuss, explain, and so on. All of these terms sound like lecturing to me. The author does mention a hook, briefly, before moving back to teacher-led activities.
