Using real world data has been recommended in today’s Earth Science classes to help students understand the nature and process of science. The GeoMapApp has students use bathymetric profiles, the depth of earthquake foci, and three-dimensional images of underwater canyons as data sources. Students analyze four different locations on the North American continent and compare active and passive continental margins. Students are able to apply their knowledge of plate tectonics and surface processes to determine how the highlighted geologic features were formed. In addition to the described activity, the GeoMapApp website has several other lessons under the Education Section of their website. It was a great activity for my student and really helped develop their spatial understanding.
