Getting students to organize and write about science can be a challenge. Although many of us have incorporated science notebooks, often they become simply a collection of worksheets and prescribed lab reports. This article provides several suggestions for enhancing science literacy by writing. Lab notebooks are organized more like that of a research scientist, and are used as documents of original entry. Lab reports model research articles. Science literacy does not end at technical writing, however, and the author suggests use of more creative activities. The article presents a wide variety of options; in my opinion, the article may have been stronger if it had focused on a single idea, but there are several great ideas to get your students started on a journey to improved writing.
