This activity is expensive but can be rewarding and materials can be used over and over. According to the authors..."Exposing students to the inner workings of the combustion engine not only sheds light on the usefulness of thermodynamics, it demystifies a device most of us use every day." Students dismantle an engine and measure various aspects of it. This is sort of reverse engineering. But having students explore all sorts of devices and dismantling them leads to a lot of knowledge of how things work.
