The author describes how a process called BIDDI (brainstorm, investigate, debrief, debate, and identify) can be applied to developing understanding of permeability and porosity. The described student-generated activities involve students in applying the scientific method and making real world connections. The authors did not discuss how to scaffold the lesson for those students who may have difficulty developing experimental protocols. Scaffolding will be necessary if students are unfamiliar with designing their own experiments.
