This excellent article gives several examples of how to use analogies to help students understand and remember science concepts. The authors suggest introducing the analogy during the engagement phase of a 5E lesson. The three examples they use are (1) comparing plate movement with the growth rate of fingernails, (2) comparing vehicles to an organism, and (3) comparing a sandwich to a rock column. It is stated that the teacher should not just state the analogy, but go into detail such as measuring and comparing the analogies!
