Dr. Roy provides a nice refresher for biology teachers about the need for personal protective gear and the toxicity of several common biological stains. These stains serve important roles in the study of cells so one need not discontinue use. The best advice for biology teachers would be to limit exposure for students and make sure that students wear gloves, goggles, and lab coats or aprons.
