This is a wonderful idea for a field study that directly ties into the Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics NGSS standards. It is a cross-curricular study that could be used in an earth science, biology, or chemistry course. I love that it has both a field component and a lab component. It is timely and allows students to understand that many factors are used to indicate ecosystem health.
