by: Michael P. Klentschy and Elizabeth Molina-De La Torre

Teacher retention and renewal are critical issues facing school districts across the United States, with the need for teacher retention at a time when school districts are also facing a need for teacher renewal. It is imperative that school districts use systematic approaches to address these issues. This chapter presents the Valle Imperial Project in Science (VIPS)—a systematic approach for teacher retention and renewal. VIPS has served as a catalyst to develop a strong and collaborative partnership between the 14 participating rural school districts in Imperial County, California, to create a multidimensional systematic plan of professional development designed to address the issues of science teacher retention and renewal.
