How Can You Tell the Age of Earth?

by: Thor Hansen and Irwin Slesnick

In the activity in this chapter, a table of measurements is presented that can be used to construct a model of the age of Earth and some of the most important events in its history. The models are constructed out of a variety of materials—wooden blocks, string, or a blackboard. The demonstration is very effective when students see that the whole of human evolution equals an amount of time that can be represented by a single layer of tissue paper on a stack of blocks over a meter and a half tall. Instructions are also given for creating a time scale using a variety of surfaces—a football field or the sidewalk in front of the school.
